N. mexicana 'Cape Canaveral' is a selection of a species hardy waterlily.  It's date of origin is 1959. It was named by Bill Frase. It has lemon yellow petals and green pads. He originally called it N. mexicana forma canaveraliensis. This name was not accepted as it was not accompanied by a description in Latin under the ICBN rules. It was therfore reclassified as a cultivar and renamed as written on this page. This waterlily is a larger flowered, larger leaved version than the regular N. mexicana usually seen and cultivated. It was collected and taken to Bill Frase from the estuary that now divides the space shuttle launch pads at Kennedy Space Center, Cape Canaveral, FL. These pictures are of a specimen that was propagated by Bill Frase and sent to Garet Uemeura.
